Carnoustie memories
Anyone watching the British Open today. It brought back a bunch of memories from my trip to Scotland with Tod Jeffers in 1984 when we actually played Carnoustie.. Here’s a shot of us playing the 17th hole. I’m on the far right in the red sweater. Upon close inspection you will note that I am wearing knickers, which I wore for pretty much every round in Scotland (Tod remarked that my choice of apparel was like a guy from New York City wearing a rhinestone cowboy shirt in Dallas). Tod has the light pants on and the other guy and girl were a couple of newlyweds from the US who were on their honeymoon and were matched up with us (the guy played, the gal just walked along).
Here’s a piece of a map of the Carnoustie golf course that shows the finishing holes at the course. I’ve placed a red X on the may where our friend Glen Durso stood when he took the photo above. The direction of the photo is toward the upper right hand corner of the map. In the photo you can see the wall of the Barry Burn running along the forefront. From the map you can see how the burn snakes around on both sides of 17. On the photo at the top you can just make out the burn behind us. If you look close you can see the walk bridge across the burn on the left side of the photo and you can also notice that bridge on the map above.
If you watched the open today, you saw Ernie Els hit his approach shot fat on 18 and it came up short of the burn (notice on the map how the burn runs right in front of 18). That reminded me a little of my shot on the finishing hole. When Tod and I played it, the pin placement on 18 was in about the same location as today, i.e at the very front of the green, about 10 feet onto the green and maybe 10 yards past the burn. When I hit my approach shot, I thought I had hit it perfect but it came up about 10 yards short – I don’t know if I misclubbed myself or the wind got it but the ball came down in the burn – but only momentarily.
Here’s a closeup photo of the Barry Burn. Notice how the bank on the left is made by bricks that form a kind of stair step up the side. Remember playing stoop ball as a kid (I’m talking to the second generation here, I’m not sure the third generation ever played anything as unorganized as stoop ball 🙂 )? You would throw a ball against the steps and it would fly backward. Well that’s exactly what happened to my ball when it landed in the burn. It didn’t hit the water but rather came down against the bricks. That caused it to ricochet back down the eighteenth fairway toward me coming to rest about 20 yards short of the burn (if I remember correctly I got safely on and two putted from there).
The big hotel in the background of the above photo wasn’t there when Tod and I played the course. There was actually no clubhouse. There was a small shack that acted as a pro shop and a gravel parking lot where you could change into your spikes. Of course that meant we couldn’t roll of the course and have an immediate brew. So after we finished our round we headed back to St Andrews where we were staying.
The route back to our hotel took us through Dundee, a working class town on the River Tay. It was about a 30 mile drive and by the time we got to Dundee we were a little thirsty. I was driving and spotted a bar just off the road. I pulled over and Tod ran inside to get a six pack for the road (how times have changed? – you just wouldn’t think of doing that these days). A couple of minutes later Tod comes out of the bar laughing his head off.
While we were in Scotland we had been trying all sorts of different beers. Since we didn’t have a clue what most of the brews were we’d simply ask the bartenders in each of the establishments we’d hit, what their recommendation would be. So that’s exactly what Tod did when he went into the bar. The bartender responded (imagine a thick Scottish brogue “Ahh, we’ve got this great imported beer – RRRolling RRRock.” Tod could not keep a straight face and was still laughing as he came back out to the car (and no, he didn’t get the Rolling Rock).
I have bunches of other stories but I’ll save them for another day.
Hi Lar, Hi Mar (Shan… anybody else)
Lots Been Happening
In the beginning of June, Shannon came to visit for a quick Friday overnight. We had a total blast, highlighted (I think) by a gin & tonic-fueled pickup wiffleball game. We have games every Friday night with the neighborhood kids, but there was a shower that night at the designated time, so no-one showed, but we squeezed in a few innings an hour later.
Speaking of baseball, both kids played organized ball this spring. Lex was in T-Ball and Char was in Coaches Pitch. I didn’t realize when I signed them up that there was a separate softball league for girls, so Charlotte and our next-door neighbor, Emily, were the only girls in the league. They loved it, tho! Charlotte was the best hitter on her team. She won their last game with a bases clearing, 2-out, true double to center (maybe the only “true” double the team had all season).
I don’t have a picture of Charlotte to offer (if I can get her to put her uniform on this weekend, I’ll try to add a shot), but I do of Lex. He and neighbor, Will, were the sluggers on their team. In hindsight, I wish I had lied about his age and put him in the Coaches Pitch league, he’s head-and-shoulders above all the others in T-Ball. But then again, it’s not a bad thing to let him have a season of total confidence.
Lis was gone for a week in June. Her dad had surgery in Nashville and she went to help out. Jack’s doing quite well it seems, he’s home, has lots of help, and hopefully is well on the way to recovery. While she was gone, Charlotte had a playdate here with a friend, Riley. I was rearranging furniture in the house when they decided to put on makeup. They brought their little makeup kit outside where they encountered Lex. He wanted to join in and they all ended up applying Lis’ lipstick to Lex’s face.
Lex asked me to put the picture on the blog.
For Father’s Day we went to Pete Seeger’s Hudson River Clearwater Festival.
(And in the chaos of leaving the house, I managed to slam into and dent my new Saturn…. que sera now…. had a cow then.)
Anyway… music, food, hair-wrapping, a new mini-conga drum, lemonade, boats, oh yeah…ecology…, and kayaking.
June 21st was the last day of school.
One last thing. Say a final goodbye to La Jeep. Junked after 21+ yrs.

Better Late Than Never
Two recent events:
Lex’s birthday Party: 10 6 yr olds and mini-golf. I’ll never do that again…. tho I may do it with 7 yr olds.
Mother’s Day: 2 traditions.
1) A picture in front of our neighbors bushes (azaeleas?).
2) A vist to the Van Vleck Gardens, here in Montclair, for a Mother’s Day Concert. (Tho we’ve actually made it for the concert only once, we do stroll the gardens.)
Sometimes the internet is freaky…
I spend a fair amount of time on a sports forum called PennStateHoops.com dedicated naturally to Penn State basketball. There was a thread today that was off on a tangent where someone mentioned a couple of famous Fordham basketball players/coaches. In that thread it came to light that the poster didn’t know John Bach who coached at Fordham before he came to Penn State as their coach. I decided to educate the guy a little on Bach (see my post).
Since Natalie Berrena is John Bach’s granddaughter I couldn’t help but include a quick paragraph, and a little commercial, about her. I wanted to put a photo in the post so I naturally Google “Natalie Berrena” for images. Low and behold what popped up on the Google results page but this photo:
Needless to say I did a double take.
Google found one of my posts in our blog and I guess Natalie’s name was fairly close to our image so it tagged the image with her name.
Try it yourself – Google image search for “Natalie Berrena”.
Yankees vs. Red Sox
This is going to break Gary’s heart, but I set foot in Yankee Stadium (in full Red Sox gear) on Sunday to see the Red Sox beat the Yankees. It was a great game, Manny hit a homer as soon as we were walking to our seats. The bus picked us up in Portsmouth, NH at 6am and dropped us back off around midnight. Thank God I took the next day off of work!

The "Thinkers"
We just spent a week in Orlando at our timeshare checking out what amenities Marriott had to offer families…we can’t wait to take Blake (with or without his parents). We probably should wait till he can appreciate Disney, but we were pleased to see how family oriented the timeshare is.
Of course, while there, we saw Linda, Richie and Harry. Harry looks absolutely fabulous (as you can see in these pictures)! He’s 92 now, 93 in June. He’s in assisted living and still has his driver’s license. He basically drives to Linda’s once or twice a week, or to a store here or there (only day-time). We met for lunch the day we arrived, then golfed another day at Linda and Richie’s country club. Harry joined us for lunch after the first nine holes, then watched us tee off the back nine. Had a great visit with all of them!
