The Shirt

The Fall Family Championship saw one if it’s most highly competitive matches in it’s history this past Friday, Aug 27. Steve Bergquist and Steve Fall traveled north to Harvard, IL to play at Plum Tree National golf course.

Off to a strong start Bergquist goes 4 up after 9, shooting a 49 to Steve Fall’s 52. But with his back to the wall Fall comes back strong winning the next 3 holes and is in with a par on the 13th with Berquist facing a 12 footer to not have the match go all square. Bergquist steps up and makes that putt and wins the next hole to go 2 up with 4 to play.

The next hole Fall wins. Bergqusit 1 up with 3 to go.

On 16 Fall hits his best drive of the day and smokes a 5 wood to par the next hole. Bergquist has another 8 footer to tie the hole (he’s been making these all day), but it slides by. Fall has fought back to all even with 2 to play.

Seventeen (a par 3) sees them both come up short. Fall chips to with in gimme range as Bergquist blades one. Fall one up.

Now the pressure is on. Fall is giving a stroke and still needs to win the 18th hole. If they tie Bergqusit wins the hole with his handicap and retains the shirt as the match would then be all tied.

With the pressure on, Fall steps up to the 18th, par 5, 4th hadicapped hole, and nails one straight left into the trees, hits one and winds up 50 yards of the tee box.

The opening Bergquist was looking for. Steve B hits his tee shot way right into another stand of trees. (Pressure! – Not for these 2)

Steve F hits a 3 wood to about 180. Bergquist, from the trees, comes out clean but carries too far into a sand trap on the left side of the fairway.

Bergquist comes out of the trap to about 50 yards. Fall puts his 5 wood on the green. Bergquist now needs to get up and down or hope for a 3 putt from Fall. Alas, another bladed wedge and it’s all but over. Fall 2 putts and the crowd roars. Steve Fall wins 2 up. The shirt is home to it’s favorite resting place.

The final 9 Bergquist shoots 51 for a total 100. Fall shoots a sizzling 40 on the back for a 92. What a comeback.

Steve Fall is ready for the next challenger. Bring it on.

Vacation

Mary and I are on our way to Puerto Rico for a week. Hope to have some pictures when we get back.

Bye

Battle of Battle Creek

Ron, Steve and I attended the Battle this past week end. I am happy to say that not only did I retain the Fall Family Championship and the shirt, but I am also co-champion of the Battle.

It really wasn’t much of a match for the shirt this year as I posted 2 scores of 83 (net 67) in the early rounds. It was decided Saturday night that the 4 top scores in the Battle would play together Sunday so match play was not an option for the shirt as I was the only one of the three of us in the top four. Ron and I decided to just go with a net score for the Fall championship.

Starting Sunday’s round I was not sure how far behind I was for the Battle championship. I was told it was around 11 or 12 strokes. As I was also giving 12 strokes per round to the leader I knew making up 23 or 24 strokes was a long shot. After 9 holes I shot a 50 and the leader had a 55. I now had 9 holes to make up 18 or 19 strokes. At that time I figured it was over and was just hoping to hold onto the shirt.

Well, after another 8 holes things looked a bit different. I didn’t really know where I stood, but I knew it was close. Unfortunatly, the pressure got to me. I pulled my tee shot into the woods, chipped out, laid up (still behind a tree in the left rough), knocked one on, and then 3 putted. So much for stepping up like a champion.

As it turned out I shot 45 on the back and the leader, Dave Milner, shot 64. We still didn’t really know who had won and had to wait for Rick to add up the totals. Obviously, I was 12 back when the day started and not 11. First time in the history of the Battle there are co-champions.

As for the shirt, Ron shot something in the 100’s so that wasn’t very close. I keep the championship until the next challenge.

So, set your plans for next year and you can all challenge me for not only the Fall Family Championship, but the Battle of Battle Creek Championship.

Vacations

Here are a few pictures of Mary and I on vacation. The first is last year at Big Sur. The next 3 are from last Monday and Tuesday of this week. We have our first view of the Grand Canyon and two pictures of Mary and I playing golf in Sedona, AZ.

Dec 1st – we have a first in quite some time

I know I do not enter much into the blog. No need to get into why.

I do think about things to enter here. We are the “mundane” remember. I have mentioned twice to Mary this past week about 2 things I could enter. One was nixed by Mary.

So, two things to remember. One I did decide to post before reading Larry’s entry. Two, we are the mundane.

Anyway, here it is. It is 10:30 on a Saturday morning and for the first time in a very, very long time my entire family is up. Chris is working and Nick is going snow boarding in Wisconsin. OK, you say “what is he talking about.” Well, yesterday would have been a more typical day. Nick, got up at about 4:00 pm to get ready for work and Chris got up at about 5:00 pm for no reason. Maybe it was because I was yelling at him.

So, that’s it. A rare happening here.

Now, the one that Mary nixed since I’ve probably piqued your interest.

Nick got off on his DUI arrest. He pleaded guilty to failure to yield right of way and drinking by a minor and is on probation for a year, but no DUI. When I mentioned to Mary that we could post this on the blog she said she thought the blog was supposed to be for “happy” things. I said, “this is a happy thing. I’m VERY, VERY happy.” So anyway, that’s it.

Larry, I would appreciate if you would not pull the plug. I wll post more often and do enjoy reading about the other members of the family who do post.

Wonderful World of Winter

A beautiful day at Steve and Mary Fall’s on Friday the first. We had 12″ of snow which started last night and as of about 10:00 am the first day of Dec it is still snowing. I don’t have a name for my snowblower (as Gary has), but it still does the trick. Seems the last two times I have gone to a concert we have been hit by a snowfall. Last year was on the way to a Hot Tuna show. This year we were coming home from Bob Seger. Not really a fan of his, but had some friends who wanted to go and we tagged along. I will say though I was quite impressed. If you like him I suggest going to his show. It was good.

Anyway, here is my first attempt at attaching a picture. Actually, I guess if you wanted to get picky you could say my second as I tried earlier this year to attach a picture of my trip to Mesquite, but since the picture was deleted from the computer I couldn’t do it. At least this time I know the picture is here as I just downloaded it from the camera.

Fall Family Champion

There is a new champion. Ron, Steve B, Nick (Ex champion), and I played Tuesday. We had three pretty nice days of weather here. Anyway, we played a points game. Six points for low man, 4 for 2nd, 2 for 3rd and zero for 4th per hole net.

Nick started slowly taking only 2 points in the first 4 holes, but made a charge on the last 4 holes of the front nine. I believe he picked up around 17 point for those holes. He was still trailing Ron and I, but was defending valiantly. Unfortunatly, he started the back nine about the same way. With five holes to play Steve B. and Nick were pretty much out of it. I was trailing by about 5 points and could have jumped to the top of the leaderboard if I was just able to knock down a couple of putts on the next 2 holes. Too bad for me, I wasn’t up to the task. On 16 I pretty much handed the championship to Ron by knocking 2 tee shots OB, but Ron let me back in the game by moving a 20 ft chip about 1 foot. He took 3rd on the hole for 2 points. I got zero.

Two holes to play and I was down 5 points. (By the way this is all by memeory so I may be a little off.) Ron bogeys the hole to lock up 2 points. I have a 6 foot parr putt to tie Nick to give me a much needed 5 points. MISS AGAIN, DAMN. I tie Ron and we both get 3 points. I need a miracle on 18. It doesn’t happen. Ron wins and is now the proud owner of 2 shirts and a hat. We still need the 2nd shirt embroidered Ron. Congratulations to Ron.

Get ready for your chance next year boys and girls. You know you can pretty much depend on an opportunity to win this coveted title at The Battle of Battle Creek. For those not aware I beleive The Battle will become a mandatory 4 day event next year.

NEW Fall Family Champion

Sorry this has taken a while to get to all of you. As you are all aware Ron is not the Fall Family Champ and neither am I.

Nick and I played about 4 weeks ago. Since Nick had not played all year, and if you’ve ever seen his game, I figured match play a stroke a hole would be pretty easy for me to retain my title. Well, unfortunatly, I was wrong. I beleive the final was something like 6 and 5. He shot 103. I shot 94. His 103 wasn’t a real indication of how well he shot during the match play. Once he had it won he wasn’t quite as focused as he was on the first 12 holes. He should have broken 100 easy.

Anyway, he has both the shirts and the hat. I have tried unsuccesfully to get another match this year, but Nick is going to school full time and putting in about 25-30 hours a week at IKEA. By the way, his emploeyee discount is 15% if anyone was to take advantage.

Since the weather is changing rapidly I beleive Nick will have this title into 2007. Get your plans together now to challenge him before Battle Creek or we may not have our tournament in a tournament event next year.

Eagles

I know, where have I been? So I haven’t been on the blog in a while. Sorry, not my thing.

Anyway, to catch up. I have had many eagles, but only 2 full shots into the hole and neither of them did I see go in the hole. The first was #10 at Chalet Hills where the green is elevated and no way you can see the ball go in the hole. I believe it was 150 yards uphill with a 7 iron. The other was #1 at Old Orchard CC in my league. I stiffed an 8 iron just past the hole. It backed up slightly and stopped a couple inches from the hole, or so I thought. I turned and put my club in my bag, turned back around and the ball was gone. It had been sitting on the lip and dropped when I turned my back.

As you may or may not know I am back in possession of the shirt. I kicked Ron’s ass (low net for all 6 rounds at Battle Creek). Wally and Ron tied for 2nd after Saturdar’d 36 holes and Ron won the tiebreaker to play the 18 hole match play Sunday. I believe the final was 5 and 4.

Last night was our graduation party for Nick. Most of the local family attended. It was a good time. Nick will be going to Harper for at least a year. Will see after that what he wants to do.

Since it’s been so long since I’ve been on here I did want to send a picture of the course we played in Nevada. Unbelievable course. I haven’t added any pictures before so here goes nothing…
Forget the pictures. Don’t know what happened to my disc.

Larry, hope your knee doesn’t become too much of a problem. I did have my knee scoped once and played golf about 10 days later. No big deal. Good luck.

Well, goodbye everyone. I’ll be back soon. Maybe I can get some pictures of the graduation party together.

Missing

I’m here. Sorry. I really only check the blog at best once a week on Saturday or Sunday mornings. Nick ties up the computer most of the rest of the time. I hope to be setting up a home office in the near future and should be on more often. I think I need to get a digital camera so I can participate in some of the mundane.

Anyway, Chris is now off to college. Started at ISU this past Tuesday. We drove him there on Friday 1/13. He is staying in Hamilton Hall. Man, I forgot how small a dorm room can be.

Yes, Larry I am jeolous of your little golf weekend. Looks like fun. I’m looking forward to the end of March whh I have plans on going to Mesquite, NV for a week with a group from my golf league. Anyone care to join me?
